It might just be the alliteration, of course, but it’s rare these days that I meet anyone east of the Bann who doesn’t say, when I mention where I live, “Fermanagh?  Where they have the fracking?” Continue reading

European anti-fracking conference Fermanagh bound – Anderson

30 October, 2014 – by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has announced plans to bring a major European anti-fracking conference to Fermanagh.

Speaking after visiting Fermanagh alongside Michelle Gildernew MP, Ms Anderson said;

“I visited Fermanagh today and met with representatives of anti-fracking groups from the county and from Leitrim alongside party colleagues Michelle Gildernew MP and Michael Colreavy TD.

“We held a very useful and positive meeting on the concerns of the local community about plans for fracking in the area.

“As part of Sinn Féin’s commitment to oppose fracking, I announced that I will be bringing a major European conference on the issue to Fermanagh in the new year.

“The conference will bring together a panel of experts and will consider the environmental, health and economic impact that fracking would have on Fermanagh.

“This event is about Sinn Féin’s commitment to ensure that fracking will not take place on the island of Ireland.”

1_chilkdrenGood news for Fermanagh (and Leitrim) 30 September

The news went out at 6pm that the Minister had terminated Tamboran’s exploration licence.  Their initial licence was for three years, during which time they were to do some works, including drilling a borehole and analysing rock samples.  In March 2014 they requested a six-month extension on this licence to allow them time to do the work (until 30th September).  In July they arrived on site in Belcoo with the intention of drilling the 1,200m borehole in the Acheson and Glover quarry, setting off an extensive protest by residents, farmers and campaigners, together with a 24-hour camp at the quarry entrance. Fracking: who calls the shots?

“If I lived within half a mile of a well that is being fracked, I would move. I’d sooner live in a tent”
Michael Hill, Oil and gas engineer and advisor to EU Commission, speaking at a public meeting in Bushmills, Co. Antrim on 28 May 2014.

Is there much more to be said about fracking?

Well it would seem so. Arlene Foster Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment in Stormont and MLA for Fermanagh and South Tyrone has described fracking as a potential “game changer” and opposition to fracking as “scaremongering” and causing “fear in the community”. Ms Foster has also stated that people must make up their own minds “with the full evidence in front of them” (Fermanagh Herald 23 January 2014). Continue reading
