Designed for doctors, nurses, and public-health specialists, it consists of 10 expert-taught video lectures covering the scientific, technical, and medical topics necessary for understanding the potential ailments, injuries and disabilities linked to the shale-gas industry. Each lesson is followed by a test; physicians who successfully complete the course are eligible for American Medical Association-certified Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits. (Anyone can watch the videos for free, however.)

Evidence – both anecdotal and scientific – continues to build linking fracking operations to human illness. For example, a new study by the Colorado School of Public Health found that women who live where gas wells are prevalent were more likely to bear babies with birth defects. Yet it’s hard to prove definitively that anyone’s ailments are due to fracking-related exposures.

So if you’re a doctor or nurse trying to diagnose someone who comes in with a rash, respiratory trouble, nausea, or some mystery ailment, the quality of information in hand can mean the difference between sickness and recovery, even life and death. If patients are to receive proper treatment, their doctors need to know as much as possible.

That’s the idea behind an online course created by the nonprofit Physicians, Scientists and Engineers for Healthy Energy. The CME course is the only one of its kind, according to Seth Shonkoff, Ph.D., M.P.H., PSE-Healthy Energy’s executive director.
