Leitrim Cllr says authority has not “banned” fracking
A Leitrim Council Councillor says the local authority did not ban fracking.
Cllr John McCartin was one of four councillors who abstained from last night’s vote on the controversial issue.
Members voted to replace the text on unconventional gas exploration and extraction, which had originally been proposed for the county development plan.
Leitrim County Manager Martin Dolan advised councillors they may be exposing the council and therefore themselves to legal action if they supported the move.
He felt the wording amounted to a permanent, rather than a temporary ban on the activity, pending the outcome of any new research due to be released.
However Cllr John McCartin says the text they voted on will be included in the county development plan, which will go out on public consultation; so therefore he believes it’s not a ban.

Leitrim Councillor says he will wait for EPA report on fracking
Tuesday, January 14th, 2014 at 2:15 pm
Leitrim Cllr Gerry Reynolds says he has full confidence in the Environmental Protection Agency to determine whether or not fracking is a safe process.
The Fine Gael Cllr was commenting in the wake of his decision at last evenings council meeting to vote against a motion to ban fracking permanently in the county.
Cllr Reynolds says while he respects the decision made by the vast majority of his colleagues, he wants to wait for the results of the EPA report before he makes up his mind on the issue.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show today, Cllr Reynolds says his policy is to uphold the institutions of the state.
